Access Space, AVEC Building, 3-7 Sidney St. S1 4RG
A two day course as part of a new initiative:
The British College of Mutual Aid,formed in Sheffield by the FoodHall project, Access Space and Redhaus books. It explores how we organise in a collective way by exchanging theories of best practice and alternative economics, the practical models needed to sustain social, architectural and creative collectives and the hurdles we all face, as the social movement has more contributors.
The British College of Mutual Aid is an alternative to current education, enabling contribution to the collective knowledge on a wider scope of views, including views which don’t have any academic platform. It overcomes the age and financial boundaries of the current UK education system by open and equal access.
Over the weekend participants and collaborators are invited to come and live together over a two day period in a more immersive and alternative approach to learning and teaching one other.
Contributors include Fran Edgerly of Assemble London, Monika Kostera, academic and author of Occupy Management!, Susie Steed, co-founder of the Brixton Pound, Dougald Hine of the Dark Mountain Project recorded an interview especially for this event about creating effective networks of self-organising projects, Larisa Blazic, artist and academic, researching how Blockchain can empower local communities, Maria Pastuskh, SESAM slavaytich and Elina Dzinovic, EASA Real. (And more to be announced).
Please note there will be a ticket price to suit you. Tickets from £0 to £30, but not being able to afford it should not be an obstacle to attending. This idea is new and it’s the first event under this banner. They are also looking for more venues who would be happy to deliver programmes under the banner of the British College of Mutual Aid.
Reclaim the Power is gathering in Sheffield, saying goodbye to 2019 in style and gearing up for 2020. Reclaim the Power is an anti-capitalist direct action network challenging the fossil fuel industry, in the fight for social, environmental, and economic justice. It’s a broad-based movement (anyone can join), working in solidarity with frontline communities to confront environmentally destructive industries, and the forces driving climate change.
Following last year’s "Power Beyond Borders" actions against the UK’s "hostile environment" this gathering will think about what 2020 might look like for Reclaim the Power as a network. A great chance to attend, find out what they’re all about, and shape the 2020 plans - new people are especially welcome. The final agenda will be shared closer to the time.Vegan meals will be provided for a small donation.
A public meeting of "It’s Our City!" following victory in the campaign for a referendum which may remove the ‘strong leader’ style of governance in Sheffield City Council. Supporters are urged to attend this important meeting about the upcoming referendum - your input and ideas are crucial!
Further details (including the venue) will be posted as these are confirmed.
Everyone is also very welcome to stay on for the formalities of their Annual General Meeting (AGM) approx. 3.45/4.00-4.30pm. New members of the Coordinating Group (CG) will be voted in - please consider this, especially if you have been one of many active supporters contributing your energy, time and/or skills - there is still plenty of work to do! To signal your interest in this, or with questions, please contact the chair on rhubba4@gmail.com
To formally vote at the AGM or to sit on the CG you need to be a signed-up member of It’s Our City! It’s just a quick form to fill, in advance, they won’t be able to process membership applications on the day. Details are here:
